Right Keywords are among the most important factors in search engine rankings. If you are targeting extremely competitive keywords then you might end up in total frustration.
Long tail keywords are the correct choice specially for new sites. The benefit with long tail keywords is that we can get rankings for completely new sites with ease. Our websites do not need to have that many links etc.
We can infact set up free blogs at blogger.com and write 10-20 posts targeting long tail keywords and start getting some traffic. We can then promote affiliate products on that blog in order to get some nice income.
Another advantage with long tail keywords is that people searching with these key-phrases are extremely focused on what they are looking for. Such kind of traffic can convert into sales very well.
However finding a lot of long tail keywords can be a real pain in the neck. However keyword research is one of the things that I enjoy the most. I am really passionate about it.
